Abstract: |
Co-occurrence of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorders have become increasingly prevalent in American military personnel and veterans. This article reviews relevant literature, covering military trauma and PTSD, comorbid PTSD and alcohol use disorder, psychosocial functioning, mechanisms by which PTSD and alcohol use disorder co-occur, and treatment options. It also presents a case study of a veteran, highlighting how PTSD and alcohol use disorder can co-develop after trauma exposure and describing the course of treatment and therapy undertaken. It concludes that there have been advances in both exposure-based and cognitive-based treatments but that challenges remain. The authors discuss directions for future research. |
