The supply of social work practice placements: employer's views

Publisher:

Rugby: General Social Care Council, 2012. 48p.

Abstract:

The General Social Care Council (GSCC) regulates the social work profession and social work education in England. Its functions transfer to the Health Professions Council in July 2012. This report, produced as part of GSCC work to capture knowledge in preparation for the transfer, focuses on the findings of a research study investigating how the supply of practice placements (periods of assessed work-based learning undertaken by social work students as part of the social work degree) is perceived by employers. Information was gathered using an online survey together with interviews with selected local authorities to provide sample case studies. The report describes the methodology and sets out the findings in detail, covering the number of placements and statutory placements, changes, regional variation, and key issues identified by employers. It also reports on factors identified by respondents as being particularly important in ensuring practice placement provision, including practice placement funding, senior leadership commitment, a learning culture in an organisation, and the relationship between higher education institutions and employers.
