Abstract: |
One of the principles of trauma-informed care is identifying recovery from trauma as a primary therapeutic goal. A new protocol for evaluating and developing trauma-informed care in behavioural health settings, based on the community readiness model, was piloted in this study. The case study was based on a large urban behavioural health programme provider with services addressing substance use disorders and related problems in living. 138 participating adults were surveyed to provide service user perspectives on trauma and integrated services, and interviews were also conducted with staff. The article reports on the measures, analysis and results. The findings indicated that the protocol is an efficient assessment approach providing valuable data about the agency's prevalence of consumer trauma, level of integrated trauma-informed services, and readiness to advance a trauma-informed organisational culture. In addition, the protocol increased understanding and awareness of trauma-informed care principles and services among staff. |
