Abstract:

This study evaluates a gender-sensitive peer education programme emphasising male responsibility for decreasing rape. The First Step Peer Education Program was developed through a collaboration between a community domestic violence and sexual assault agency and a high school in a large suburb of Detroit. Eleven peer educators were selected and received 15 hours of training including knowledge building in sexual assault and skill building in listening, presentation, and communication skills. In classroom and large group assemblies, these peer educators provided information on sexual assault, male responsibility in preventing assault, risk reduction, rape culture, sexual assault laws, and how to help a friend who has been assaulted. All students who attended a presentation were surveyed both immediately before and afterwards. Follow-up testing was conducted 3-months later using the same survey to a sample of 108 students. The findings revealed that at posttest and 3-month follow-up, the programme decreased rape-tolerant attitudes among both male and female high school students. Students who were strongly connected to the school, similar to a peer educator, and interested in the presentation showed the greatest improvement.
