Alcohol Concern was funded by the Big Lottery Fund in the 3 year Embrace project to assist alcohol services to work more effectively on overlapping issues of alcohol problems, domestic abuse, children and families. The Embrace Knowledge Sets bring together evidence, policy frameworks and practice guidance. The aim of this report is to help adult alcohol services to improve their response to those whose lives are affected by another person's problem drinking, and it provides an overview of policy and practice initiatives for working safely with family members, including where domestic abuse is present. It sets out the evidence base on problem drinking and the policy background to recent developments in alcohol, children and families, carers, domestic abuse and drugs sectors. It discusses practice issues for alcohol services, makes recommendations for commissioners, service managers and policy makers about providing services to meet the needs of families and carers, and provides a list of key points for service practitioners. The appendices provide case studies and a list of resources.
