Systematic reviews and meta-analyses
A systematic review provides a comprehensive survey of a topic in which all of the primary studies of the highest level of evidence have been systematically identified, appraised and then summarised according to an explicit and reproducible methodology. A meta-analysis surveys studies which are similar enough statistically to combine the results together for analysis, as if it is one study. These reviews are important because they generally provide a better guide to practice than an individual study.
Extended abstracts of systematic reviews and meta-analyses have been specially commissioned for Social Care Online. They include a summary, the context, and description of methods (including a source list and the search criteria used), findings of the review, author's conclusions and implications for policy or practice.
