Material on Social Care Online is categorised in two different ways, by ‘format’ and by ‘content’ type.

Content type

Content type refers to the contents contained in an item. 

1. Type search word(s) or terms and select Topic field (for more relevant results)

2. Click on search                                                               

3. To refine the search to only display government publications, tick the Government publication box (see below)

4. Click on Apply               


You can refine by more than one content type. Content types are:

circular – government circulars, including: Local Authority Circulars (LAC), Welsh Assembly Government Circulars (WAGC), Health Service Circulars (HSC)

consultation document – government consultations published by central government departments, executive agencies (eg Child Support Agency) and non-departmental public bodies (eg Audit Commission and Youth Justice Board)

directory - including items which are listings of organisations or contacts, and items which include substantial listings or directories within their contents.

event – information about social care workshops, training sessions and conferences. These records are submitted by Social Care Online users.

good practice – including publications and practice guides produced by non-government organizations which provide standards for good practice.  Service examples which have been identified as ‘good practice’ in the literature are also included.

government publication – items published by central government departments, executive agencies (eg Child Support Agency) and non-departmental public bodies (eg Audit Commission and Youth Justice Board).

guidance - guidance issued by central government departments (eg Department of Health), executive agencies (eg Child Support Agency) and non-departmental public bodies (eg Audit Commission and Youth Justice Board).

inspection report – inspection reports from regulatory bodies eg Care Quality Commission; Ofsted (Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills).

legislation - including Acts of Parliament (primary legislation) and statutory instruments and regulations (delegated or secondary legislation).

policy document – including government policy documents.

practice- including service models, descriptions and examples of services, overviews and descriptions of practice methods; and case examples.

research – including reports of primary research, research articles, summaries of research and records from the Research Register for Social Care (RRSC).

research review - including research reviews, literature reviews, knowledge reviews and systematic reviews.

standards – including government standards and standards issued from national bodies with statutory authority.

statistics – including digests of statistics, statistical bulletins, national statistical surveys and major statistical reports.

training material – including training and teaching packs; training and teaching manuals; and online training resources.

Format

‘Format’ refers to the type of resource or type of material of an item.

3.  Tick the boxes of format that interest you - for example, eg audio/visual material and online resources

4. Click on Apply               

Format types used on Social Care Online are:

article  - for example: research, practice and current awareness articles from journals, magazines and newsletters.

audio/visual material – multi-media and non print media, for example: CDs, audio tape, videos, DVDs and Social Care TV records.

book – monograph publications available in print or via the internet, for example: government documents, legislation, research reports, briefing papers, discussion documents, text books, training material, biographies and autobiographies.

journal – journal records provide a short description of the coverage of a title and provide a link to the home page of the journal, magazine or newsletter when available.

online resource – interactive material developed for the web, for example: web tutorials, e-learning material, blogs and databases.

research register – records from the Research Register for Social Care (RRSC), which includes current and completed research carried out by local authorities, research organisations and Department of Health funded research.

website – website records provide a short description and link to an organisational website
