Title: Intervention programs
for children of parents with a mental illness:
a critical review.
Reference: International Journal
of Mental Health Promotion, 8(1), February 2006,
pp.9-20.
Abstract: This review evaluates
the quality of the existing evidence for intervention
programs for children in families affected by
parental mental illness. Five hundred and twenty
articles were reviewed, and twenty-six studies
were judged to be relevant. The majority of these
studies were randomised trials (n=8) and pre-post
interventions with no comparison or control groups
(n=8). None of the studies measured cost-effectiveness
or included customer or carer consultation, and
few outlined the theoretical basis for the development
of the intervention program. Seven studies were
rated as methodologically strong, four as of
moderate quality and fifteen as methodologically
weak. The authors conclude that this data provides
very limited evidence of program effectiveness
as determined by well-being or illness outcomes
for the child. It is argued that future programs
should be rigorously evaluated and widely disseminated,
with long-term follow-up of participants.

Systematic reviews

H.; et al.;
Title: Improving child protection:
a systematic review of training and procedural
interventions.
Reference: Archives of Diseases
in Childhood, 91(9), 2006, pp.740-743.
Abstract: Seven studies of procedural
interventions and 15 of training interventions
are appraised in this review, which covers evaluations
published between 1994 and 2005. The quality
of evaluation was generally poor, but certain
procedural interventions such as the use of checklists
and structured forms can result in improved recording
of key information and may help alert staff to
the possibility of abuse. Several potentially
effective training interventions were identified,
but the quality of evaluation makes it impossible
to draw firm conclusions. More rigorous studies
of training programmes are urgently needed, as
well as additional objective evaluations of procedural
interventions.

Meta-analyses
Example of record for meta-analysis:
Author: FINGERET Michelle
C . ; et al. ;
Title: Eating disorder prevention
research: a meta-analysis.
Reference: Eating Disorders,
14(3), 2006, pp.191-213.
Abstract: Eating disorder prevention
programmes have yielded mixed results, and there
is some concern that where they include the provision
of information they may trigger the behaviour
they seek to prevent. This meta-analysis of 46
studies finds no evidence that this is the case.
The interventions studied produced large effects
on knowledge and small effects on reducing maladaptive
eating attitudes and behaviours. Studies targeting
participants at a relatively higher risk for
developing an eating disorder produced greater
benefits. The authors conclude that such interventions
are worth developing and implementing.

Title: Let me in I'm a researcher:
getting involved in research
Publisher: London : Great Britain
. Department of Health, 2006. 116p.
Abstract: This report is about
how to involve people with learning difficulties
in research. It is for anyone and everyone who
does research, takes part in research or pays
for research. It is for people in universities,
people in government, people in policy organisations,
those who give grants for research and, of course,
people with learning difficulties. This report
was produced by a team of researchers with learning
disabilities. In 2002, the DH Policy Research
Programme funded twelve academic research studies
designed to assess the impact of the Valuing
People White Paper. Each of the research teams
had indicated it would involve people with learning
disabilities in the research process. The authors
of the report were funded by DH to assess the
extent and nature of this involvement, and to
make recommendations based on lessons learned.
The team of people with learning disabilities
were provided with training and logistic support
by Values into Action, but otherwise took full
control of the whole research process.

Title: Race Equality Foundation
Abstract: The Race Equality
Foundation (formerly the Race Equality Unit)
is a charity developing better social work
and social care services for United Kingdom's
black and minority ethnic communities. Site
contains background information on the Foundation,
information on its projects and publications
and a list of conferences and events. In addition
includes information for senior black managers
and information on the National Network Project
for black voluntary organisations. The Foundation
promotes race equality in social support (what
families and friends do for each other) and
social care (what 'workers' do for people who
need support) and disseminates good
practice through training, conferences and
written material.
