Searching for more than one term or word

Please note: the inclusion of an additional space at the end of a search term does not effect the results.

Example one:

author=”beresford peter” and author=”turner michael” Note: truncation is used
or
author=”beresford p*” and author=”turner m*“

Example two: Title search about education, to include the words education, educating, educates, educational etc.

Example four: Searching in more than one field

Search for records that contain the phrase 'what works' in the title and that have 'children' as a topic term:

Using a mixture of search operators

Example five:

Search for bullying in schools:

Note: it is necessary change the search operator from and to or when broadening the search out. It is also important to separate the mixture of search operators using brackets. The search operators and brackets need to be typed in manually.

This may also be typed as:
topic=”bullying” and (topic=”children” or topic=”school children” or topic=”schools”)

Limiting a search by publication date

This feature means searches can be limited by a given year (2007) or whether a date of publication is after a given date or before given date. References date back from 1986.

publicationdate>2007 References published in 2008+
publicationdate<2007 References published before 2007

Example six: Search for adoption or fostering references published between 1999 and 2000 date search

This may also be typed as:
(topic=”adoption” or topic=”foster care”) and (publicationdate>1998 and publicationdate<2000)
Or
(topic=”adoption “or topic=”foster care“) and (publicationdate=1999 or publicationdate=2000)

Saving advanced searches

Example seven

Test the search works before saving it!

When you have formulated your query click on Save button.

saved search

You will be prompted to give the search a name.

add name for search

Your saved search will appear at the bottom of the Advanced search screen.

saved by title

The search will be saved for your future use. To run the search again click on Add to search and it will be pasted into the Advanced search box.
