Highlights key messages from selected research published in 2016 and 2017 on the topic of harmful sexual behaviour, identified from the NSPCC’s online library. The briefing looks at factors associated with harmful sexual behaviour, such as the characteristics of children and young people, links with abuse and neglect, and links between online and offline HSB. It also looks at issues for professionals to consider when working with children who display harmful sexual behaviour and their families; the effects of harmful sexual behaviour; and preventing recurrence and reoffending. Key messages include: that exposure to trauma is a key factor in the development of HSB; and that labelling, criminalising or stigmatising children or young people that display can make it more difficult for them to recover and regain a ‘normal’ life. Interventions to support children and young people who display HSB should also consider each child’s development, family background and any broader child protection concerns.
