Presents a summary of the findings, key messages, recommendations and next steps of a two years inquiry into practice and research in the arts in health and social care. The inquiry involved evidence-gathering and discussions with patients, health and social care professionals, artists and arts administrators, academics, people in local government, ministers, other policy-makers and parliamentarians from both Houses of Parliament. The inquiry established that: the arts can help keep us well, aid our recovery and support longer lives better lived; the arts can help meet major challenges facing health and social care – ageing, long-term conditions, loneliness and mental health; and the arts can help save money in the health service and social care. The document includes case studies to illustrate good practice, and make ten specific recommendations as catalysts for the change of thinking and practice that can open the way for the potential of the arts in health to be realised. These include: establishing a strategic centre, at national level, to support the advance of good practice, promote collaboration, coordinate and disseminate research and inform policy and delivery; developing a cross-governmental strategy to support the delivery of health and wellbeing through the arts and culture; and ensuring that arts and cultural organisations are involved in the delivery of health and wellbeing at regional and local level, including through social prescribing.
