Practice guide which looks at the role community based organisations play in preventing, protecting and supporting women and girls at risk of and affected by Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). It is based on learning from the Tackling FGM Initiative (TFGMI), which aimed to strengthen community-based prevention of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) among affected communities in the UK. This guide documents, develops and highlights best practice that community based organisations developed through the project. The guidance is divided into three key parts. Part A focuses on prevention and provides techniques to work with different sections of the community. It highlights the importance of engaging with each group in different way. It looks specifically developing community champions and at working with women affected by FGM, men, young people; religious leaders and religious settings; and working in schools. Brief examples of practice from the TFGMI are included. Part B looks at access to mental health care and support, and the role of community and specialist organisations in helping identify the mental health needs women affected by FGM and referring them to specialist services. Part C looks at how community organisations can work more effectively with local authorities and professionals employed in statutory services, including working in FGM case work. Each of the sections detail the rationale for each target group, outlines activities conducted by community organisations to reach this group and then highlights best practice. The guide aims to help community based organisations working on or planning to work on FGM and will help local authorities to support the development of joint working with affected communities and the community organisations who work with them.
