This article looks at the implications of maternal imprisonment on the welfare of their children, particularly when the mother is the sole primary caregiver. It discusses the increased risk to the child, including a greater risk of: emotional and behavioural problems; anti-social behaviour; and possible offending. The extent to which the rights of the child are considered when giving sentences to mothers with dependent children are then considered. Some measures to bridge the gap between the child welfare and criminal justice systems are then suggested. (Original abstract)
